Description: This book provides an overview of the delivery of clinical education with a specific focus on the educator's role. It examines different facets of this topic in order to better prepare the clinical educator and provide clarity regarding the transformation that needs to occur in order to foster professionalism and mentorship in the clinical setting.
Purpose: The general intention of this book, as described by the foreword, is to examine professional practice and the important role clinical educators, professional supervisors, and mentors play in influencing the quality and evolution of this practice. The objectives of this book are worthy and have been met by the editors and contributing authors.
Audience: The readership for this book is varied, depending on area or theme of the book. Due to its unique nature, the book can be relevant in both academic and clinical settings. In the spirit of embracing transformational change, it is imperative that the audience consist not only of clinical educators (focus of the editors) but also of managers, deans, curriculum designers, and vice presidents who are in positions of organizational influence.
Features: The book is intended to highlight that the practice of clinical education requires and will inevitably (and desirably) undergo transformational change in order to meet the changing demands of healthcare and its educators. As a result of the proposed and required post-modern transformational change, the challenge for education and practice providers is to help make thistransformation positive in both the experience of the process and the outcomes for learners and practice participants. This book attempts to support this view by providing a systematic approach and analysis of six key themes that need to be developed in order for this transformation to be successful. The six key themes are: the clinical education process and the role of the clinical educator; teaching and learning; challenges in clinical education; self-supervision; beyond clinical education; and evaluation and future directions in clinical education and supervision. These themes or sections strike a reasonable balance between background information and the challenges that historically have been identified with clinical education, thereby necessitating the transformational change for future success. It should be noted that some sections have more depth and breadth than others. In general, the table of contents and the topic areas reflecting the intent of the material are well thought out and presented. The articles are informative and are contributed by well qualified authors.
Assessment: This is a very useful and comprehensive resource that presents the future of clinical education in a unique post-modern perspective. Its transformational and thematic presentation of diverse yet related topic areas makes it difficult to directly compare it with other books in the field.
